If you ask me the alleged chase for winger Ilya Kovalchuk by the Los Angeles Kings was exactly just that... alleged. The Los Angeles Kings are Stanley Cup pretenders until they prove otherwise. It seems all they ever do is put a team on the ice that's maybe good enough to squeak into the playoffs but never quite good enough to actually make a real run at the Stanley Cup.
This year that fact is even more painful to withstand only because the team is very young and talented and is maybe only one really talented winger away from making a real run. This team is on the verge of challenging for the Stanley Cup if management would just acquire a top flight winger that can score consistently. This team has grit, toughness, tenacity and did I mention that they're also young and talented particularly on the defensive end?
It was almost painful to watch the Kings in the playoffs last year because going in you already knew that they were one big player short. As good and talented as they are they still need a top flight sniper/winger that can score consistently to keep the pressure off of their defense and goalie.
Name one team that consistently challenges for the Stanley Cup without a big time scorer on their roster?
Now that Ilya Kovalchuk has signed and Simon Gagne has been traded the lowly Kings have already retreated into the "we may just start the season off with our current roster..." talk. Somebody tell these guys that they play in Los Angeles and that Los Angeles deserves the best team they can put on the ice... Not just a team that will fill up the Staples Center every night and line their pockets with profits!
Stop managing this team like you play in Minnesota Leiweke. Your loyal fans deserve better.
